This is the open shelf β a living, real-time register of every book in World on Bookshelf: country by country, book by book. The essays go out in two separate newsletters β in English at worldonbookshelf.com, in Ukrainian at worldonbookshelfua.substack.com. What lives here is the registry itself, shared by both: what has been read, what is waiting in the queue, and whose voices speak for each country.

π About the project
One book per country β the single door the author of the project would open first if you read nothing else from that shelf. Chosen by hand from the books rated 5 out of 5, so the list grows by one entry per country, never by dozens. A personal judgement, not a canon. Why this one on each card says what the book did.
A country is never βdoneβ because the pile is tall. Here is what is still missing from Afghanistan, and the one test that closes it.
Stop criterion. When the last book read stops surprising me β when, picking up a new author, I already know whom they will argue with and on what point.
